Back pain strikes countless individuals and can range from a mild discomfort to a seriously disabling condition. For some, it is brought on by a constant stress placed on the back through things like heavy lifting or moving; while for others it can come from simply sitting still for far too long.  Relaxing your back isn't good enough if you want to get rid of back pain; you need to relax your entire body.

Because your back muscles are so large and connected to every other muscle group, tension in your calf muscles or shoulders can cause the back pain to persist and even to intensify.  Sometimes, standing over a prolonged period can cause back pain, but there are certain things you can do to relieve this. Always wear comfortable shoes, and try to stand on a soft surface whenever possible.

Rest one foot on a stool, and try not to bend over your work. Every so often, change your position, and if possible try to find somewhere to sit for a few minutes at a time.  Apply ice to help reduce swelling. When you injure your back, blood flows to the affected area causing it to swell. While swelling is a normal part of healing, excess inflammation can increase the pain.

If you apply ice it will speed up healing and numb the pain. Use ice for the first two days after injuring your back. Never apply directly to the skin - always have some kind of barrier like a towel or pillowcase.  Many minor back injuries that cause back pain happen in the morning while your back muscles are still stiff. One important thing to check is that your sink doesn't force bad posture. Be sure to get up and walk around and loosen your muscles. It is easier to keep them from getting cramped rather than trying to get out the cramps in your back.  One way to avoid having back problems is to make sure that you are sleeping on a good mattress. A medium-firm mattress tends to give the most support, and make sure you have some comfortable pillows so that your body stays aligned when you sleep. If you notice that you always wake up with a backache, it's time to throw out that mattress!  As a back pain sufferer, a little bit of pain may actually make you feel better, so do not be afraid to exercise. The reason you feel pain is because the muscles are sore and stiff. If you can work through this and loosen the muscles up, you can do light exercise and help to get rid of the pain.  If you are experiencing back discomfort, then perhaps your bed itself is to blame. Consider sleeping on several different models of beds in the meantime until you find one where when you wake up in the morning and the back discomfort is gone.
